If I were attempting to make this I would use a cake for the base and rice crispie choc treats for the tunnel/chimney thing on top and cover it all with fondant !

It's the way she did the colors I am not sure about. Is it just strips of colors and black icing. That's were I am stuck at.

To me it looks like fondant with black edible marker (or a similar product.) In some of the close-ups you'll see what appear to be seams in each color of fondant with the black covering them.

Look in the comments. She says she made strips of the six different colors of fondant. The black looks painted on - to match the drawing style of the book.
