How do you paint with luster dust? I have never tried, but really like the way it looks. Help, please.

Mix a small amount with a little clear alcohol until you have a thin paste then simply paint

I have to ask - is that clear alcohol like vodka, or is there a special alcohol to mix with?

vodka, just don't be drinkin it while your decoratin!! LOL or you will be dunce.gif
You can also use clear vanilla.

I wonder, however, if it is safe to use the vodka if you are going to be using it on things children might eat.....children will eat the fondant, and definitely chocolate...should this be a concern since you will not 'cook' the alcohol out?

When you paint with the vodka you only use a tiny amount. (I use an eye dropper to add mine) and the alcohol actually evaporates within minutes just leaving the colour on the cake and it is also tasteless so it's fine to use with children. In England we can get a product called painting solution which is a really fast evaporating alchol but I don't know if it's available in the US

I use Gin when I 'paint'.. & mix it on a white saucer or plate till I get the colour I want... ie.. darker or lighter..

Hope this helps... happy painting icon_lol.gif

I just used Luster dust for the first time - I mixed mine with vanilla schnapps, and it worked great.

The gold and burgundy are both luster dusted on the cake - the rest is buttercream.

DH was so happy with the colors!

What about Tequila? Will that work to mix with the luster dust? I have some of that on hand.

I started using vodka, but now I use everclear when painting with dusts or even colors. Everclear dries very fast and isn't sticky as long as the vodka is.

O.K, I thought you were all crazy or I was the most incompetent person in the world. I could not use my luster dust, and I did everything you all said. Well, I was NOT using Luster Dust; I was using something called Shimmer Dust. I just got some Silver Luster Dust, mixed it with lemon extract, and it was wonderful, everything you said it would be. Sorry I thought you were crazy; it was just me. THANKS, THANKS!!!

I will never doubt you all again.

We all make mistakes Bulldog so don't worry about it. On a practice cake try dry brushing your shimmer dust across the top of your painted lustre dust or dry brush onto coloured fondant for some different effects

Once again, very helpful, good ideas. I will definately try that. It is so nice to get help that is constructive and not critical. If this cake comes off, I will post a picture.

Thanks again. thumbs_up.gif
