I'm going to make a shoe box cake with a gumpaste high heel, and was wondering what the best way is to make the shoe box with the lid propped open. I've never done a cake like this so don't really know how to do it.
Any tips and suggestions greatly appreciated!

Use styrofoam and cover it with fondant for the lid (like the above poster mentioned).
I used styrofoam for the lid on a baby shower cake I did. I propped open the lid with a small wooden dowel that was in the cake towards the back. Covered the lid with fondant and filled with the gum paste 'paper' (and a baby's face sticking up). It works great.
