Hi! I'm new to the forum and new to cake decorating. I usually stick with cupcakes and cookies, but I promised my mom a birthday cake and I need an idea. I will likely be working with buttercream frosting, maybe some RI flowers, but would like to stick with the BC. Any ideas for an impressive, yet not too difficult birthday cake?

thanks in advance!
Lindsay

Do a search in the gallery, you will find some amazing ideas! You can look under flowers, female birthday, mom...
You will be very stunned at the talent here on CC and Welcome!

Hi Lindsay,
Welcome to CC. It is a great place. What skill level are you at. Have you learned basketweave yet? A lot of people are very impressed with the royal icing flowers on a cake. If you look in the articles section there are a couple of items that you could use. There is the Martha Stewart basketweave instructions it is not the piped style but lokks impressive. There is buttercream transfer instructions and a couple of others you may like. I usually use my family's interests as an inspiration for my cake designs.

Welcome Lindsay! Try searching in the gallery for piroutte or pirouline cookie cakes. They are stunning, but look pretty easy to do. I'm still waiting for an occasion to do one, I was hoping to do one for my mom's birthday, but no, she just wants chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate, LOL

cake-angel, I have been practicing with the basketweave recently, and my only problem is I think I had the icing too think. Maybe I'll try it with a thinner consistency. My mom does like baskets (specifically the really expensive longaberger ones!), so I was thinking of a basket full of flowers (some roses, some drop flowers, maybe I'll learn some new ones).

I have looked through the gallery some, there are such amazing things here! I really hope to some day be able to master all of these techniques and be able to make my love of baking into a business of some sort.

Thank you all in advance for your help, I'm sure I'll be asking for it again!

Yes, just search the galleries. You can even look for a specific color. Becaeful - this site is addictive! Especially when you start looking - you'll look up and the day is gone!

Good luck! Be sure to post the photos! icon_smile.gif
