I love the idea that instead of being intimidated/living in fear of rolling fondant, (I can't believe I'm saying that!) one might choose courage, education & practice.

They say "Fortune favors the brave." In this case, the "fortune" refers to 25 bucks a pop back in your pocket. icon_smile.gif

I happen to enjoy rolling fondant! lol

Personally, I think this product is a flash in the pan - I would never use it, and at $25 a sheet, you can bet I won't be paying that for it!

Pre-rolled fondant has been available in supermarkets in the UK for years. It's a flat disc that is loosely rolled (just like pre-rolled pastry) which you un-roll and place on the cake. I've tried it twice and had cracks and crazing where it dried out far too quickly.

It's not something I would use but beginners would probably be attracted to it.

Although we as cake decorators can see & imagine just about every possible scenario of how wrong this can go ... I think the creator is on to something. The video said more colors are coming soon as well. I don't like the price. However, if I knew nothing about fondant & wanted to do a cake for a special occasion I would buy it, because it saves a step.

But back to reality I do agree it cost to much & very rarely do I make a fondant cake in ivory or white. And on another good note...someone will buy that & see it's not as easy as it looks and have more respect for us that do it the regular way.

Just like there's no get rich quick scheme there's no decorate the cake fast & easy scheme. But he is on to something & I hope it works out for him. For me ... just give me "The Mat" & I'm good to go icon_biggrin.gif

I just watched him demonstrate the product to Marina Soussa (sp?) at ICES convention. I am sure that if the product takes off, he may be able to find a less expensive method for producing it. If you owned a cake decorating business and had to pay an employee to roll out the fondant, how much would that cost you? As far as the taste, it really isn't too bad. One other quick comment, what about cake decorators who have arthritis, repetitive motion injuries, carpal tunnel, etc. Wouldn't this be a dream come true?

I'd rather spend the extra money and buy a sheeter - oh I dream of owning a sheeter. However living in the UK (boo!) the chances of me owning a somerset sheeter are pretty slim! icon_sad.gif Maybe one day icon_smile.gif

Great call, nanefy -

Everytime I roll out fondant, maybe I'll drop $25 into my sheeter fund!

BabyGerald, that is exactly what I do. I save money that I would have spent and later, I have the product. My kids now do the same thing. I have change in one drawer and in my gazillion cookbooks, I save paper money, each section earmarked for a gadget. You can laugh, but this is how I saved the money for my entire bakery.

It took me alot of practice to get fondant on a cake without tears and wrinkles at the bottom, and yes, every once in a while I still get a tear and have to take the whole thing off and reknead and reroll. I think these sheets would be good to do cut outs for beginners but I dont think its going to be too easy for them at first to cover a simple cake with it. But I do wish him the best of luck with his idea and hope it works out for him!
