Ok, let me begin by explaining what I would like to do. I am making a 9 x 15 cake. I will airbrush half the cake (diagonally) red and the other half blue with white stars of different sizes. This will be a red velvet cake with BCF. In the center of the cake will be a BCT of the Houston Texans logo. Now this is where my question comes into play.....

First....I would like to make a Texas flag out of MMF and drape it over the top left corner of the cake. Can anyone give me step-by-step instructions on how to make the flag? I don't know how to approach this at all. Completely clueless.

Second, I have seen a recipe on this site for crusting cream cheese frosting. Can anyone give me this recipe? I would really like to make the frosting cream cheese since it is a red velvet cake.

TIA!
Misty

I can't help with the flag, but here's the crusting cream cheese frosting. I made it on a red velvet cake and people were inhaling the cake it was so good!

I forgot to write who the recipe is from in my document. It was from someone on here though.

CRUSTING CREAM CHEESE ICING
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
1 pound cream cheese, softened
1 tablespoon clear vanilla extract
3 1/2 pounds sifted confectioner's sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt

Cream butter, shortening, cream cheese and extracts. Gradually add confectioner's sugar and salt. Beat on low speed until nice and creamy. If you want whiter icing, try to use butter without dyes available at most health food stores.

This recipe is for a stiff consistency. For a thinner consistency, use 3 pounds of powdered sugar instead.

If you want a very smooth cake, let the cake sit for 15 minutes after icing. Then smooth with the non-printed side of a Viva paper towel.

Thanks for the recipe! That should be perfect!

P.S. I did forget to mention in my original post that the cake is due tomorrow!

Maybe you could look in the gallery and then PM someone who has done a flag drape.

Good luck!

Wilton has a cake with a flag drape on their site. Its under the patriotic section under recipes. When I did my flag style, I essentially used the base color and then cut out strips of the second color and rolled them together. If you have a pastry roller that would be ideal, but even if you just rolled them together you'd be fine. As far as any stars or logos, I think you could either a) use a star cookie cutter to cut out the and then replace with another cutout (seal it with water) or b) lay the logo on top and make it a bit 3D.

As for the draping part, once you've got it together, you'd just need to arrange it on the cake. I'd start with one corner and lay it down from there.

Check out the Wilton site though, they do have a few of those drapes which might give you some ideas.
