Hi. I'm doing a cake and the idea I have for the bottom tier is to do wavy lines like the themed plates have on them. The thing is, it's for an 8-year old's party and I do not want to put MMF all over the bottom tier. My thought was to do the lines in icing by using the star tip.
Anyone else have any ideas on how I can do all the colorful lines (vary in width) in icing?
After your icing crusts a little and you smooth it, get strips of paper and lightly tap the edges so it marks the lines out. Then when you lift them there will be light indentations and you can fill in the lines easier. Piping gel may also work to give you lines to start from.
Thanks for the response. That was actually how I was going to get the lines on the cake, I was just really trying to find out if there was another way to do the lines on the cake in icing without doing stars. I think the star will be good for this cake but with only using icing I was trying to find a way I could do them smooth but I just don't know how to do that with multiple colors.
The basket weave tips will give you a nice wavy line as long as you're consistent with your movement. Also the "big" icing tip is good for this. I looked for the number but mine doesnt have one ![]()
You could also use a comb if you wanted (I dont have much luck with this though)

Thanks HTH. I thought about the basket weave tip but I think I'm just in a state of indecision. I think you're right in that they would work pretty well and with the design I think they might work better than the stars. Luckily I have a couple basket weave tips and the big icing tip.
