good morning- I think I am going to have a lot of questions today! icon_biggrin.gif
I am doing a wedding cake for a friend in feb based off of this cake
http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=favpics&cat=0&pos=-88771

it will have white satin ribbons and yellow gumpaste roses instead of lilies. There will be clusters of roses to make up the volume!
on the top she wants a big show of roses(they will be mmf/fondant)
like the birthday roses cake in my photos.
any ideas for constructing a topper of those roses so that 1 it is nice and full and kinda 3d and 2 so that maybe she could keep them nicely if she wanted??/
I was thinking styrofoam w/ a base to protect the cake- but that tends to rip. any thoughts would be most appreciated!- thanks

When using real flowers, I've seen florists use a plastic coffee can lid as the base, so I'm sure that would work for your florals also.

why not make a round cake (using half of the sports ball pan) to put on top of the highest tier and cover that in your roses. That way they are built up without having TONS of icing on top to add fullness.

Hi there,

If I understand you correctly you plan on making rosesout of fondant but you want them to look full, right?? You're going to have to make them into a full bunch by wrapping them together w/floral tape. You could place the bunch into a floral pick (you can find these in the floral section of your craft store) this way the wire/tape do not get into the cake... just a thought.

Hope this helps,
Mimi

I am still having problems opening photos at times so wasn't able to see this one. I have made gumpaste rose toppers so think fondant wouldn't be that much different, although I think I would knead in some Tylose powder to give the fondant a bit more strength and drying ability.

I used a 4" styrofoam round, 1" thick for the base, covered the bottom with a circle of gumpaste attached with gum glue and let it dry to protect the cake icing. I wired each of my flowers with floral wire, taped the stems, cut them to length and pushed them into the styrfoam in the arrangement, I added tufts of gathered white Tulle to fill in the spaces between the flowers, but you could use leaves, filler flowers too. I covered the edge of the styrofoam with a piece of white satin ribbon hot glued in place. Here is a photo of the topper before I had added the Tulle, the cake itself with the completed topper is on page 4 of my photo gallery, the Mickey and Minnie cake.

thanks everyone greta ideas!- i miss typed and meant to say roses of mmf/gumpaste- the styrofoam makes sense - plus that eliminates sticking wires all over the cake !

Shirley,
Those roses are beautiful... one day with practice I hope to be half as good. icon_smile.gif
I am saving it for inspiration.
