Getting Sand To Stick

I have a Beach Theme cake i'm doing this weekend and i want to use Vanilla Wafers for sand on the cake board.How would i go about getting the sand to stay in place?Piping Gel?Buttercream Layer?

I use piping gel! Works everytime!
