I made a batch of hot pink icing using the Wilton pink paste coloring. However, in order to make it the hot pink she wanted, I had to use a lot of coloring. Now it has that bitter taste like the red icing gets! How do I mask the bitterness? I used half shortening and half butter, and vanilla. maybe butter extract? She wants the whole cake frosted in this hot pink! I want her cake to taste as good as it looks! HELP!!!! QUICK!!!!!

If it's not to much to do, could you remake the frosting and spray it pink?

I would just add more flavoring until you can't taste it anymore. I had the same thing happen once, and adding more flavoring was the only thing that helped. It was way more than I would normally have used, but anything was better than that "food coloring" taste! If you have any creme bouquet, try that....along with more vanilla. Good luck! icon_smile.gif

JennT, are you refering to extract or oil flavoring?

I can't spray it because i don't have an airbrush. So, I need to somehow at least balance out the bitterness.

Extract....I, unfortunately, don't have any oil flavorings. I just added one tsp extract at a time until I could no longer taste the coloring. Do you use the oils? I hear they're great! icon_smile.gif

dolphindreamers, They sell little spray cans of coloring. Wilton has some and so does Betty Crocker. You can get them at the grocery store or craft store.

Thanks for the tips guys! I have only used extract so far. My daughters birthday is this month. So, I may try the oil then. If I can't get rid of the bitterness,I may have to try the spray!

Well for the amount of icing I had, I added a whole bottle of butter extract and a lot of vanilla! I had to add more powdered sugar to keep it from getting too soft, but it worked! Thank God!

I have been buying powdered colors in red, royal blue and black. I start my icing off with those and then add the gel paste to get the exact color. The powdered colors give you a good base color and you don't get the bitterness of using too much red. I'm sure you can get it in pink. I get all of mine from bakinstuf.com.
