When I have to make a "BIG CAKE". The size I use is a 14" round. I bake two cake mixes twice and then add a filling.. It comes out to be about 4 to 4 1/2 inches thick.. For a normal order I bake two cake mixes, cut then fill..
Thanks briansbaker. I guess that would be the easiest way to do it!!! I had to ask because cake is so delicate and I couldn't imagine cutting a huge cake in half and removing the top in order to fill it!!! I figured it must've been two cakes!!!!

OMG Deb,
I made a 12" round cake and cut it in half to fill (it was my first time) I stuck a cake coard into the cake while I was lifting it with a spatula and I thought I was gonna have a heart attack in the process because I was soooo worried that it was going to fall or break!!!! LOL ![]()

There are these white sort-of foam-core boards called "TUFf" boards that I got at my cake supply store. Somehow when I use these to slip between the halves of a layer I've cut, I don't feel as nervous as when I use the cardboards. They seem a bit easier to slide. An 12 x 18 rectangle is about $3.50 here, which is definitley a lot more than cardboard, but you can wash and reuse for a long time.
