Covering A Cake Board With Fondant - How Do You Do It?

Hi guy's,
I am only just starting out in the cake making scene and would love to know how to cover a cake board with fondant, Well i kinda know how but would to know the do's and donts, hints and tips would be much appreciated.
E.G: Do i use straight fondant? How many day's ahead do i need to do it so it doesnt mark when placing the cake on.

Or you can cover the whole board and then put your cake on top.
Use normal fondant, so long as you can keep it in a box so dust doesn't get on it and in a cool dry place, you can cover it months in advance (providing its the whole board your covering).
It's always good to stick a ribbon around the edge to cover the silver of the drum, it gives it a professional finish. Just glue it on using a normal glue stick.
