I was asked to make a cake with a graduation figure-girl on it. I've never made figures before any suggestions or words of wisdom? should I use fondant, gumpaste, or a combo?

I think use a combination of both would be best. The fondant will let you have more time to work with the piece and the gumpaste will allow it to dry faster and keep it's shape.
