I would really like to learn how to use fondant. I have taken the first two Wilton Courses but still haven't taken the 3rd (the fondant one) should I take that class to learn how to use fondant or go ahead and try to learn on my own? What do you suggest?
I would suggest you take the course if possible... I was intimidated by fondant before I took the class and said there was no way I'd ever work with the stuff. After taking the course, I fell in love with fondant and love working with it .. so I'd suggest taking the course so you'll be comfortable with it ![]()
It really helps to see someone else do fondant and be there to help you that first time. When I was in Course 3, I thought, I don't even know why I'm here, I'll never use fondant. Haha, wrong! Fondant is my favorite cake medium now.
There is a really good tutorial here, it gives you a good starting point!

I am in Wilton 3 right now.... I bought the ready made Wilton fondant ...which we are required to use. I figure it will at least give me some experience handling it, etc. The class only cost me $7.50 for all 4 classes! It was 1/2 off (which it often is!) and the instructor gave us a $5. coupon at the end of class 2. Can't beat about 8 hrs of instruction for $7.50. You just take from it what you can and go from there on your own. The kits are out for the next Wilton class which is all fondant and gumpaste. I got the kit already so I can play with the toys in it! LOL! I will take that class too.... why not....
I will make my first batch of MMF (the mini marshmallow recipe on CC) this week. I think I will enjoy it..... I'm kind of nervous about it too but I hear it's easy to work with.... Go for it!!
Yes I think I find fondant intimidating so that is why I think the class would help me not be so scared to use it. I know once I use it I'm sure I am going to love it! When I do take the 3rd course what should I bring to that first class? Will they tell me at that time?
I say take the class. Why not? ![]()
As far as what you need to bring to the class, if they do not give you a list when you sign up ask for the instructor's number so you can contact her and get the information. I can give you the list I give to my students, but some of it may be different than what you are asked to bring.
