The easiest way to make caramel buttercream is to simply add some caramel sauce, either homemade or store-bought, at the end. I also vaguely recall reading once (really helpful, I know!) that someone made caramel IMBC by cooking the sugar longer than normal, until it became a medium amber color. I think they still added some caramel sauce, though.
Sometimes I make SMBC using brown sugar instead of white -- it's not quite the same as caramel, but it's similar. I don't know if that would work for IMBC, though.
