Help With An Open Gift Box Cake

Hi everyone, I was asked to do a cake similar to this http://cakecentral.com/gallery/70046 and I am unsure if my thinking is correct on how to do it. Here are my thoughts.

Bake 3 layers (1 thiner for lid), cover bottom in fondant, then dowel to prop the lid open, place lid on and dowel again through the whole cake.

Any guidance would be great!

You're right on! If you can sneak a peek at Elisa Strauss's book Confetti Cakes for Kids, she has a project cake with complete directions of a gift box with cake as the lid.
