Stacking On Center Pvc Pole

I see them stack on the center PVC pole all the time, but I don't know how you start out. How would you attach the PVC pole to you cake board, and can it be attached to a regular 1/2" cake drum or do you have to use something else?

Most times I have seen them use a heavy/thick plywood base and they screw a metal plumbing flange into the board and then screw the pole into the threaded flange.
