I am making some swim suit cookies for my sister's district swim meet. I wanted to do them to match their team suits. Their suits are black with orange embroidery on the chest that says panthers. If I cover the whole cookie in black icing, will it turn their teeth and mouths black? Is it hard to get a nice black icing? Would I be better off to reverse the colors or do them on chocolate cookies and just pretend that it was black? I'd rather not do that if there isn't a problem with the black icing since the little decorations that are going to go with them are actually black.
Thanks for answering all my questions...i really appreciate the help! ![]()
You put cocoa into royal icing and it makes a black color? Would that turn their mouths black? Maybe I should give that a try instead. Or do you think I should just make the chocolate cookies and put the accent writing in orange and leave it at that?
Thanks for the help!
It you want a good black I would recommend starting with chocolate frosting and tinting that with black color. Much easier to go from brown to black than to try to get black from white frosting.
I just did some black MMF icing and it did not turn our mouths black so maybe the ready made fondant wouldn't either? Or maybe you could just make up a batch of MMF.
I would agree with Erin about starting off with chocolate icing (can be achieved by adding cocoa powder to RI) and adding black coloring. I'm not sure whether it would turn their mouths black or not (depends on amount of coloring added). The fondant is another option as well. But if all else fails, I guess you could go the chocolate cookie with orange detailing
Good luck & happy baking! ![]()
Thanks so much for the responses! If I go the royal icing route, I'll make sure to use the cocoa powder and then go from there. I'm glad that you mentioned that because I will be doing dark brown icing for my sister's wedding and I never would've thought of that, I was just going to use brown coloring. ![]()
So, what would you all do if it were you????
-black royal icing
-black fondant
-dark chocolate cookie with icing only for the accents
Sorry...I'm just having a hard time deciding which would be best. I wish I had time to experiment and try them all, but I don't think I will have time.
Thanks again!!! ![]()
hehe, my son would love that... anything that turns anything colors is funny with his 7 year old mind.
I once did a black base iced with red accent goth birthday party cake and those teenagers were just elated with the black icing... I have some really cute pics to prove it - sticking their tongues out. Hmm. college graduation I will have to pull them out to put on their cake... hehe
Sorry, it just made me laugh at the memory...
(I'll go away now....
)
Oh I think they would love the black, if they win they can run around sticking out their swim team colored tounges at the other teams. lol. Hmmm guess it would come in handy even if they didn't win. ![]()
I would also go with the chocolate icing with added black gel/paste color. (I strongly recommend the Americolor Super Black.)
In fact this is what I did for black details on my son's birthday cake last weekend. If you can find Dutch Process cocoa (not Hershey's or Nestle, which are lighter in color), it makes a nice dark brown color, so you won't need as much black.
If you try to do it with just icing color, with RI or MMF/premade fondant, it WILL turn mouths black. (A few weeks ago, someone posted a picture of her son's mouth afterhe had eaten a section of MMF roadway from a cake, and it was impressive. LOL!)

I agree any kid loves things to turn there tongues different colors. There is a huge candy market doing it. I don't know how old your sister is. But my teenager loves it as well as my 8 yr old girl. Me not so much. But I start with the chocolate icing also to make black. We are a nascar family(Dale Sr) So we do alot of black. And I have several family member turning 40 and 50 So black is our color. Good Luck on your hunt for the black color.
Thanks so much for all the responses. I'm going to try the cocoa powder (thanks for the brand recommendation, btw..I'll see if our store carries that) and try and make the icing black from there. I think you all made a good point that they might not mind if it turns their mouths black..lol!
I'll give it a try!
Have another question for you..hope you don't mind:
Do you think that a bouquet of all orange and black cookies (black with orange details, orange with black details) will be too boring? should I try and incorporate some other colors in there to make it look better? I was planning on doing a swim suit to match their team suits (black with orange writing), a chocolate flip-flop sucker with orange and black details and some simple circles saying things like "Go Panthers," "Good Luck," etc. Any other ideas? Do you think it would look better to incorporate more colors or keep it to just the two?
Thanks so much for your help!!! ![]()
Use cocoa powder (Dutch processed/Special Dark, if you can find it) and add a tsp at a time until you get the desired color. I ended up adding about 1/2 cup to a full recipe of MMF to get it really dark brown. But you want to use the powder b/c the melted chocolate will change the consistency of your icing A LOT.
