i did it, i actually had photographs on the edible image and mounted them on black fondant and i thought it looked good. just make sure to use frosting and not something wetter like water or liquor or lemon juice or it will make the image and the fondant run!
I did it on this cake, and it was fine. You won't need a liquid to bond it to the fondant if you do it when the fondant is still freshly rolled and slightly tacky. If you do need a little moisture to adhere it I would probably use a little piping gel. HTH
