I try to take a peek at the store before I buy them. Those Bridal Mags aren't cheap. I like the Receptions mag Better Homes and Gardens puts out.
I am also very frustrated about the lack of wedding cake coverage in bridal magazines. I've come to the conclusion that these magazines are just a great big advertising flyer for the wedding dress industry. I've picked up a couple that have a blurb on the front cover about "Wedding Cakes for Spring!" or something like that and if I look real hard, I can kinda see a cake or two in the background of the pic!
It's probably one of those catch-22's: Bookstores don't stock wedding cake magz because brides don't buy them, but brides don't buy them because the bookstores don't stock them!!!!!!!!! ![]()
My Barnes & Noble carries the Wedding Cakes magazine that is published quarterly (printed in England), and I found a Wedding Cakes mag in there the other day that is printed in Australia.
I guess that the bridal magazines figure that the brides will get their ideas from their cake designer &/or the internet. Many of the wedding websites have cake galleries that you can look through, print pics, etc.
I, as well, LOVE the WEDDING CAKES magazine from England. Pages of cakes...just cakes. It's great inspiration. It's with the Bridal magazines at Barnes and Noble and at Borders.

I see you are Canadian too! I buy the same magazine as Angelas2babies but I get it in Chapters/Indigo. They don't always have it...and they go quick but have a look...in my Indigo store, it is with the chocolate magazines and other specialty cooking mags.
Good luck!! You will love it if you can get your hands on it...tons of cakes and lots of inspiration!
I just posted a thread in General about this the other night...got my first Martha Stewart Weddings, and YUCK. There were 4 cakes in the magazine, none of them would I make. Thousands and thousands of dresses, though.
It makes me mad to pay for something that's purely advertising. The articles were generic and useless. And with a 3 year old I don't have a whole lot of time to sit down and flip through magazines, and I spent 20 minutes, thinking "there will be a cake...soon..."
From now on for my inspiration I'm sticking with the CC galleries. ![]()
I have to agree with amandasweetcakes, I picked up last year's Receptions magazine by BH & G, and it has some great pics in it. I like that it includes the price per serving of some of the cakes so that brides can get a little reality check! ![]()
So I got my hands on 15 wedding magazines. I thought AWESOME, cake pictures. I pulled out 6 TOTAL from all of the magazines. Crazy eh? 6 pictures in 15 magazines.
How are brides supposed to get ideas? And what can we do about it?
Here in Australia we have bridal magazines. But we also have Wedding Cake magazines. They're great because they're purely cake. No dresses or florists etc. Just pages and pages of cakes. Maybe you could subscribe to an international magazine? I've heard that there are good ones in the UK too.
I get this magazine from Barnes and Noble about every 3 months or so. It's full of wedding cake ideas and limited ads. I googled "wedding cakes" "a design source" to find a link. There were a few.

Sounds like one of us needs to pitch this to a publisher in the US!
My friends (non-bakers) are big fans of the Ace of Cakes show- I think this may be an indication that cakes are going to become a higher "priority" for people here! ![]()

I have always received requests for creative themed cakes but rarely got an order when I quoted a price.
Since FoodTv has been doing the cake competitions, etc, I have taken many orders for those types of cakes. It has definitely brought awareness to our industry. YAHOOOOO! And people are being educated about the work and time involved, value and cost.
