Can I quilt a cake frosted with Crusty Buttercream or can you only quilt on a rolled fondant?

I've done both, but the fondant has a more "quilted" look where the buttercream is more two dimensional.

The first birthday cake I have in my gallery, the pink one with the ribbons and such, is all buttercream. It looks nice but doesn't have the puffy look of quilting that fondant gets.
