Hi!

Need help! I would like to make a standing up 2D ballerina and place it as a cake topper. I like the idea of doing a royal icing run out on a cookie, on a stick and stick this into the top tier of my cake. But I'd like to do this using gumpaste. That is, do royal icing runout on a gumpaste cut out. I'd have to cut out the gumpaste myself to the desired shape as I can't find any ballerina cut outs. Using gumpaste is easier for me as there's no point just baking one or two cookies to do this. Need help on some things though....

1. how thick should my gumpaste be so that the "stick" can be placed in the gumpaste sheet.

2. how thick and long should the stick be so that it won't fall/topple over if i am to just stick it into the cake since gumpaste can be heavy.

There is a picture of a two tiered "clown" cake with an elephant on top on http://cindascreativecakes.com . go to PHOTO GALLERY, KIDS STUFF. the cake is called "under the big top". How is the elephant held up? I believe the elephant and clowns are made with gumpaste? what's your opinion?

If anyone could give me any tips or know how the clown cake was done, I'd really appreciate it!!

Thank you so much!

Marion Frost uses this technique a lot in her patchwork cutter books. She cuts a shape out of thin gumpaste, lets it dry, places a cocktail stick so 2/3 of it sticks out the bottom then places a 2nd gumpaste shape over the top (stuck to the first with water) so basically you have a sandwich.
The books and cutters (including a ballerina) are usually for sale on ebay or I know a few internet stores in the US stock them
