Help Trying To Get A License In Il
Business By brandiandedgar Updated 22 Jan 2007 , 3:09am by brandiandedgar
Hi I am a new cc member and have been decorating cakes for about 1 year now mainly for family and friends but now people are showing interest in buying my cakes. I am now looking in to getting licensed and have figured out that it can not be done in my home. Does anyone have information on if it is possible to get a license by renting out a kitchen say in a church or something similar to that? I am going to call the business department tomorrow and try to get information from them but being that I am in Chicago it seems anytime you try and call the city you get the run around. I would appreciate any information I vcan get.
Thanks

Depending on where you plan on operating your business, check with the city (county clerk) to see what steps you need to take with them to get a city business license.
If you plan on incorporating - start that right away, or just get your name of your business registered by doing an assumed name (which will need to run in the newspaper for 3 or 4 publications in the legal ads. You might want to go to this website - this is packed with information on getting started. http://business.illinois.gov/starting.cfm .
While all of this is going on, you should register for a food/sanitation class (call your local health department). Some counties offer the class one night a week for 6 weeks.
Find a space to rent while all of the above are going on. Once you have your food license they will check your location and give you the green light.
Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for your help I knew I would find what I needed here on CC
Thanks again
Brandi
