How Best To Attach Ribbon To Cake Drum?

What is the best way to attach a ribbon to the sides of a cake drum? I used a hot glue gun, tried to smooth the hot glue before application, and the glue formed large lumps that can be seen. It is not smooth at all. Any advice? Thanks in advance!
I like to use a glue stick on the ribbon, then attach the ribbon in the back with a small pin.I have done it with just a pin and no glue just wrap it really tight, then you can adjust it!
I like glue dots, personally. I place them around the drum every few inches and then put the ribbon on. They're forgiving enough that you can readjust the ribbon once or twice in case of lumps or puckers.
I use a hot glue gun (low temp), I just apply a thin line in small sections, then I apply the ribbon and smooth with my finger AFTER applying the ribbon, I've never had any lumps...
But I like the sound of the glue dots, I never even thought to use them, and they sound WAY faster & easier! I even have them because I use them for other purposes!
I use double sided scotch tape. Love that stuff!
