Some of you may have read my post a few weeks ago that my good friend asked me to make her daughter's 3rd b-day cake and I was/am in a complete panic. I am new to this and don't think I am good enough to be doing it for a party yet. I made a practice cake today, disaster!!! the icing melted off the cake and the filling is bulging.
Anyway, to make things WORSE I just got and e-mail from her that she passed my number on to her mother in law for her sister in law's shower cake and maybe cookies
WHAT???? I have never done cakes for anyone but immediately family at holidays and even those I can count on one hand. What was she thinking ??????
Normally I would be thrilled about my name getting passed on but seriously I have never done a cake for her or anyone else and she told her MIL how great I am ![]()
What??? What should I do?
She said"I guess I should have asked before I started to pass your number around." Um, YES. Not that I am not appreciative, I am just not ready to do cakes for the public ![]()
If I do it and it is so BAD I will never get their business again.
Sue
STOP Sue!!!
Take slow deep breaths...I just took a look at your pics. You are ready to do this...you CAN do this. Take it a step at a time, remember-that's why they call it practice. Figure out why the icing slid and the sides bulged.
"What was she thinking?" Probably that your cakes are beautiful and delicious ![]()
Lots of support here...
Kathy
O sue hun, I just answered your other post.
I know you can do this.
Sometimes it takes us to be put under pressure to do our best and most awesome work.
You'll be fine, you'll never know you're ready til you get put in the pressure cooker and come out just fine.
Then you can put that feather in your cap and say to yourself, "See, I knew I could do that!"
You really should embrace this challenge. Your cakes are great. You really have to remember that most people are really unskilled at making and decorating cakes, especially if they are using store bought frosting etc. I am so critical of my cakes, but I have even sold a few to friends and aquantances who have seen my cakes at parties etc. So while to me they are full of flaws, to most people they are awesome.
You have NO reason to worry. Your cakes and cookies are wonderful, and quite obviously, your friend sees that, too. I felt the same way when I started. Now, I take it in stride. As you do more and more orders, working on different skills and new designs, your confidence will build. Trust me! We're all here for you!!! Now, go get 'em! ![]()
just take your time and enjoy making the cake......i know you can do it.....
If you aren't ready to go public..tell them and don't take the job.
If you are going to stress about doing a cake for someone, other than a family member or close friend, you might need to practice a bit more.
This is supposed to be fun!! If you aren't sure you can do a good job, step back and get some more practice under your belt.
First of all... stop panicking!! This should be something fun for you! Panick and stress are not very much fun! I just did a cake last weekend for a friend's daughter who turned 6. I was crazy enough to call her and volunteer to do her daughter's cake, just for the practice. It ended up being a princess cake with a tiara that I made - but the plan was for it to be a carousel cake. I was very disappointed when I could not get it to work - but I went to plan B and made that work. And the birthday girl just lit right up when she saw the cake I did make her (she didn't know about the carousel cake).
My advice is to do the cake. Give it your best effort. Believe that you have the talent to do this - because you do! Have a backup plan or two up your sleeve and see if your friend will give you artistic license to do what you need to to make the cake the best you can. My friend did not care what flavor or what it looked like.. we all need friends like that! Then practice the things you need to practice. And most of all BELIEVE that you can do this!
Good luck. I foresee many orders in your future ![]()
- have fun and enjoy it!
Your cookies are wonderful. Im sure you can do it!! Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time. ![]()
I have to be honest with you and tell you that you ARE ready. Your cakes and cookies are great. I have to also tell you that I feel it is a good thing that you are a little nervous. Sounds like you are a person that wants to do the best that you can and believe me when you hear all of the compliments when you walk in with the cake you will feel the same amount of pride and joy and can't wait to do the next one. Use your nervousness and turn it into excitement that you are given this opportunity. Truly, you talented so enjoy it and they will love it! If you have a question and need a quick answer while putting the cake together or you need a word of encouragement just let me know. My telephone number is on my website and I will be there for any support you need.
