any ideas how to get the fondant on a cake to look like this without using an airbrush? I'm trying to do an African sunset theme cake

Thin down gel color with vodka and paint it on with a paint brush. start with the lightest color and work your way up.

I would probably try painting with the gel colors and blending them together.

would I use an orange and red then?

I would start with yellow on the bottom, blending into orange, with maybe just a little red at the top.

The person who first posted this pic here on CC says she used rum (I assume mixed with gel color) to paint the colors on. If you look closely, you can see the brushstrokes of the orange on the yellow, and on the red at the very top.
