Hey everyone, I am looking to you for your opinion in shipping a cake. I am going to be shipping a cake to a friend this week. I have been thinking USPS or UPS? I am going to either need to ship this cake out tuesday or wednesday depending how I ship it. I have heard horrible stories about the UPS people are atlot rougher with packages than the USPS. I am going to try my first time at MMF tomorrow I guess depending on how I am going to ship it. I am using the recipe that calls for fluff, it seems simple to use. I have only done one cake with fondant and HATED the taste of it. When I did the one fondant cake I did use the ready made fondant put out by wilton's, so that was pretty easy. So here are my questions for you all.

1. Any tips on using MMF for the first time?
2. WHen should I cover my cake with MMF? (Mind you I have two small children with me during the day.)
3. Would you ship it USPS (Prioity Mail) or UPS? I think UPS is cheaper but I am worried about their handling of a cake. Not much differnce in price for shipping a few bucks. If I ship USPS it has to go out Tuesday, for UPS it would have to go out Wednesday.
4. Oh and how do I tint MMF?
5.How do I get the small detail work with it? The cake I did was the butterfly pan. How do I get the small detail into the MMF, like I would with BC?
6. Do I use a coat of BC under the MMF?
7. How much MMF do I need to cover this cake? Will one batch of MMF be enough?
8. What taste of BC goes with the MMF best?

Okay I think I am done with all my questions, but please feel free to drop me any suggestions. Thank you for your help.

I actually prefer UPS
Use crisco to help with the MMF not sticking, but not too much crisco.
You tint MMF by putting a small amount of color in it and kneading it until colored...it's really easy.
you'll need a coat of BC under the MMF so it'll stick to the cake.
One batch should be plenty.
Regular BC is the best.

Good luck!

I have never shipped a cake so I am not too sure about that one....
1. I use crisco to make it not stick, not cornstarch.
2. When to cover? Whenevr your ready...not sure what your asking.
3. I have never shipped a cake.
4. The easiest way to color MMF is right after you've melted the marshmallows, when they come outta the microwave...then you can just stirt it in rather than kneading it in.
5. Dont know what detail your talkin' about.
6. Yes.
7. One batch should be sufficient.
8. I recently found out that adding almond along with vanilla for both the MMF and bc tastes better than just vanilla!

I work with a girl who works for UPS--She just showed a bunch of photos of packages that did not survive! She told me never to ship with UPS!

I don't think the USPS is any better than the UPS. I shipped a couple of large packages through the USPS that were well marked to keep them upright. I printed in large, bold letter ... ''this end up'' ... ''arrows on all sides pointing up'' (universal sign). And what did my friends see at the post office?
Yes, boxes on their sides!!! AAAAARRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH

My family has a business and website (not related to cakes) and we ship out a lot of packages with UPS and the USPS. Our regular UPS driver usually laughs at me when I write "this end up" on our boxes. We have a lot more packages lost with UPS and find that they get there a lot faster when shipped via the USPS. Good luck!

I am asking when I should cover the cake in MMF, just before I ship it out the same day or the night before I ship it out? The detail I am talking about is I did my cake in the shape of the wiltons butterfly pan and want the detail that you would see when you do plan BC but in MMF? Do I just cover the cake in one piece of MMF and than do the detail work with different colors I want? One more question is do I just wet the MMF to get it to stick like regular fondant? Remember I have never worked with this stuff before.
