I have read that using blossom tints work well in colouring cocoa butter for a more intense effect when hand painting light colours over coloured sugarpaste, but I wondered whether the concentrated pastes would also work- they would be more cost effective if so!
Has anybody tried this at all?

I use powdered food colors (not petal dust) with cocoa butter.

Me, too. That's what I was taught in my class with Marsha Winbeckler.
