Hi,

I have a cake due out on Sunday. It is going to be an eight inch bottom with a small 6 inch stacked on top. Can I just set the 6 inch on top of the 8 inch, or do I need to add something to support it?

Thanks for your help!

yes you need to add support dowels. For a cake this small drinking straws should offer enough support under the top cake. (DONT forget the board under the top layer)

About how many straws do I use? I guess I would decorate each level then just put them together?

Thanks for your help!

Though your 6" is small, if our going to support, use 4 so it's wieght is distributed.

Decorate all but not the bottom border of your 6". Do that after you stack.

Here is how I do it. I cut a cardboard circle a little smaller than the top tier. I mostly use the skewers that you use for shish kabob. I frost my base cake with both the crumb, then final coat. Then I put one dowel in the middle, & then 4 around the edges where the cardboard will be. Then I place the top tier on. Then crumb coat then final coat & decorate. I prefer this way. Helen

Sure you can do it! Just make sure you have plenty of time. Relax. Do each step carefully. And before you know it....you have your first tierd cake.
