I am going to attempt to make my first sculptured cake for my daughter's 7th birthday. it will be in the shape of a purse and I would like to give it a quilted look - any ideas on how to make the pattern so that everything is even. I will be using buttercream as I am not a big fan of fondant. Help

Have you considered buying an impression mat? They run about $5 depending on where you look. Just a thought.... icon_razz.gif

you can also make your own. get a piece of stiff cardstock and make a 90 degree triangle . set it against the crusted buttercream and carefully mark a line every inch or so using the side of a ruler to imprint the line. then flip it and do the same going the opposite direction. you can then add a dragee or a bc dot where the lines meet if you'd like.

Thank you for your comments I will try both ideas on a practice run just to be on the safe side. Thanks again

For the time you'll save and all the future use, I too recommend an impression mat. They work great and do not cost much. If you have a local cake shop, give them a call to see if they have them. Otherwise all the big name websites carry them.

Thank you all for your well wishes. I went to Michael's yesterday which is the only store that carries cake decorating supplies(Wilton) and they did not have an impression mat so I guess I'll have to go at it the hard way. Wish me luck
