But calling it an "investment"...come on. Who came up with THAT! We here on CC have a unique appreciation for the talent and time that goes into some of these cakes, but there is no way I would call it an "investment". A special indulgence, sure.....
People call things an "investment" when they know it's going to be expensive and people are going to complain. It's the semantics game.
also...Zombie therad! Zombie thread!
HAHAHA, zombie thread, love it! There's been a lot of those lately.
One can argue that the investment is in the form of memories created during a special event. If you provide a cake for the event that goes above and beyond, people will be talking about how amazing the cake was for years to come. If the cake is average, no one will remember it and there will be no emotional ROI. A poor quality cake would result in negative emotional ROI.
If I was going to argue about it being an investment, besides saying that you invest in a cake that may be double in price of an adequate cake, perhaps you just spend the money and get a nice one, rather than letting a friend of the family donate a hunk of crap. Or a less than average one. ;-)

I am lost! Why is it a zombie thread?
Just because it is old? I must be the only one that truly enjoys seeing the old ones "brought back from the dead", lol. There is a WEALTH of information buried in this forum. It is older, but no less valid. This forum has more buried knowledge in it, than most of us will ever dream of. Tips and tricks that someone invented, and were excited about enough to post, are my favorite, I don't care how old they are. Maybe I am getting old.

OK so here's another rant about customers and thier unrealistic expectations for the price of a custom cake. Woman call me this evening and she wants a smaller (to serve about 25) 2 tier with zebra striping on 1 tier and a sculpted full size zebra stripe high heel shoe on top, so i tell her it would be around $200 ish and she pauses... "well what if you did a single tier cake under the shoe sculpted to look like an ottoman"... about the same price..... "Well how about a shoe box with the shoe on the lid"... I say that would be about $175... "Oh well I only wanted to spend about $100"... I say "well that will get you the shoe" CLICK. Dead Air. I don't think she liked that very much.
I don't think my pricing for this is too off base, if anything I tend to price on the lower side. Am I crazy to think that she has to be high to get a shoe cake for $100?
People have just been driving me nuts lately!- I had a cake pick up this weekend where the woman wanted a 3 tier cake for her daughter sweet 16 for $75!!!!! Well, she ended up with a 10" round after I explained my pricing (and of course after she called around and realized that my $65 for a fondant decorated 10" round with gumpaste accents on top was a pretty decent price) So anyway, she shows up to pick up her cake in a blinged out Hummer... SERIOUSLY... you have this uber expensive car but won't spend more than $75 on a "super special' (her words) cake for her daughters sweet 16!
OK, done with my rant
AOmg.... same thing happened to me! Lady penny pinched me til the last day.....after constantly calling me about this&the other...I felt a little bad &cut her a break. Well! How about her husband is a deputy &she pulled up in a blinged white hummer.....boy was I pissed... cause she can afford it crying like she's broker than broke! How about me?... the single parent & no husband trying to make ends meet! Then when she came back a few days later to return my wood c ake board.....she rolled up in a NICE pick up......WTH?....GUESS WHAT? I don't feel bad for ANYONE!! anymore. ..lesson learned
