Hi,
I've only done one purse cake so far but it was really pretty easy. I just baked my cake in two loaf pans, then stacked them on top of each other for the shape of the purse. I've seen many purse cakes and I'm sure they carve off portions of the cake for a more rounded look or just cut the cake into a different shape. Many of them I've seen, including mine were detailed with fondant that was just cut to fit.

Do a search for purse cakes here or on say google and you'll find lots and lots of pictures. You can go by those for the basic design and details.
Hope that helps.

I ususal make my purse cakes out of sheet pans, they are a pit thin but usually I need about 35 servings, I just cut in half then stand up, then I put two dowel rods in clear into the board. works just fine.

How did you transport you purse cakes? Were they already dowled and stacked or did you do it once you got at the site? I really want to try and attempt a purse cake for a b-day party and just trying to get ideas.

First go to www.justfab.com to check out a Chanell handback and then search modern bakery purse article. There is an article there by a guy named Buddy something. You can get the instructions if this is what you want. I couldn't get the exact site for you. Dean and Deluca sells a cake purse for $150.00. I read that you could use a book pan and then just cut it in the middle and that gives you the look.
