I think this greatly depends on the instructor.

I took Wilton 1, 2, & 3 back in 2006. The instructor I had for the 1st one, was not as polished as the one who taught 2 &3. I got a bit out of the first class, but did feel like she spent a lot of time just reading from the book and trying to sell the yearbook. The teacher for 2 & 3 was nothing short of amazing.

I just started teaching Wilton classes myself back in October. I don't recommend other brands to students, but I also will NOT recommend any product that I feel is not worth the money and I tell my students this right off the bat. I also help them to work with what they have, so if they choose to buy nothing other than the student kit they can still complete the course successfully. Again, I think the "sales pitch" depends on the instructor. I also give lots of tips that are not covered in the book, I follow the curriculum, but definitely add extras and coach/troubleshoot with each student while the work on their techniques.
