Isomalt ?

Is isomalt edible? I was watching a cake show on TV tonight and one of the judges mentioned to the contestant her cupcake decorations which were made of isomalt were not appropriate. He said that isomalt was not edible. Granted I realize it's like a hard candy so not something you want to chomp down on but I thought it was safe to eat.

Of course it's edible. It's an invert sugar. It's hard and might break a tooth . . .

I just watched that and my DH asked me if I knew that. NO - I thought isomalt was just sugar and it was edible. I am really shocked he said that.

Isomalt is a sugar derivative that is used to make sugar free candy. It is edible. However, you body can not process it and so it just comes out the other end. So a bit is fine. A lot will give you internal distress, cramping, and loose poo.
