I am newbie to the cake world because I mostly do cookies. Seems I make my icing (buttercream dream) and crumb coat, then frost the cake. I do the decorating and it seems by the time I am finished, the icing on my cake looks like it has small cracks is it. Nothing drastic but they are noticeable. Should I add corn syrup to it? It is smooth, and I think maybe even too soft. Any hints? This is only my third or fourth decorated cake so I am learning with each one!

One possibility is if your cake board is not strong enough and allows the cake to flex, that would cause small cracks in your icing.

I have had that happen when I iced cakes that were too cold (still frozen)... but that was the only time.
