What buttercream has the best flavour, texture, smoothes well on the cake...? crusting buttercream, italian meringue, swiss meringue etc...

best flavor is all in personal preference. If you haven't tried them then i suggest making each to find which you like better.

I think each smoothes well on a cake, it's all in the technique you use, as they each require a different kind of technique to get smooth (since they're different consistencies)

I agree with leily. It depends on your preference. Also, each type cream gives the cake a different overall flavor. So, it all depends on what type of flavor you are going for...
