I use the wire (not sure of gauge) that you can purchase at Micheals. There is a lot of different opinions about putting bare wire into cake. I have done it successfully on 3 cakes and no issues. Some wrap the wire with floral tape, but I question the floral tape in the cake. And another method would be to stick coffee stirring straws into the cake and the the wire would go inside the straw.
Anyhoo - the wire comes in black, silver, copper color - and not sure what other color. Just play with it in the store and make sure that it is sturdy enough to hold your stars.
