Patchwork Cutters...mexican Or Gum Paste?

I purchased Marion Fost Patchwork cutters and they suggest using Mexican paste. What do you recomment using with these cutters. Mexican? Gum paste? or Fondant? Any information will be appreciated.

I used gum paste on my Nanny's Hat Box cake. It takes patience and practice and toothpicks to clean out the crevices when it messes up.
