I have always been interested in the decorating aspect although I'm not the worls'd best baker but I can make cookies and cakes. Where you start ? I will be taking the Wilton method classes in Feburary. Is one place better than the other Michaels or Hobby Lobby? I was thinking about taking them at both since they are on different days. Have anyone of you ented classes elsewhere? I'm curious about the Wilton school but wanted to try the other classes first.

Thanks,

Kelley,

Welcome to Cake Central. I took my first class at a local cake supply shop and then went on to take Courses 2 and 3 from Wilton's. I took my classes at Michael's. I enjoyed all of the classes, but learned more from the local cake shop because the classes were 4 hours once a week for 5 weeks. It was great.

Welcome Kelley,
I think you will learn a great deal from CC. I took all my classes from Michael'. The main reason I did it that way is because they were offering the classes for 1/2 off. Then my instructor was incredible and taught all three of my courses. I am waiting for the new course to be scheduled because she will be teaching it also. Good luck with your cake decorating endeavors and I look forward to seeing your cakes. I plan on going to the Wilton school for the Master course when I can afford it.

Hi Kelley and welcome to CC!!
I took all 3 of the Wilton courses and am getting ready to start they're fondant/gumpaste course in a couple of weeks.
I wanted to take classes at a cake shop but the owner/instructor went through a terrible ordeal with carpal tunnel and doesn't offer them anymore.
I have to say I learned a great deal from the Wilton classes. Take what you learn there and combine that with what you will learn here and you will become a superb cake decorator!! Every time I come to this site I learn something!!
Post your cakes please!!!! icon_smile.gif

Welcome! I can't tell you the difference between Michaels & Hobby Lobby, we don't have Hobby Lobby around here. But I will compare the two stores that offer the wiltons course's here. AC Moores & Michaels. Our AC Moores has a very small classroom, they have about 15 of us in this very small room barely enough room to move round let alone set up your stuff without intruding on someone else's space. Michaels has a BIGGER room, by the looks plenty of room to set up and move around. I wish I would have signed up at Michaels for that reason alone. I also have to consider the time the classes are offered too. I wish you luck in your new hobby!

The difference seems to be the instructor. Go to the store before you sign up for the class, and get a look at her, try to talk to her.
We've read stories here of everything from the best in the world to OMG...
Good luck, have fun!
