I have seen some cakes and underneath the person has written "this is my first cake" and I think to myself, "Wow! I wish my first cake looked that good!" I am so thankful for the gracious friends on CC who didn't comment that my cake looks terrible or whatever first came to mind. I thought about taking it off but then I figured it might be good for a few laughs or gasps from some other people. So here is my cake that made it to the hall of shame but I thought was precious at the time. Do you have one you want to post too??

My first Wilton class we iced with bttercream and made the cupcake on top. I made my buttercream with butter instead of straight shortening. The classroom got so warm my icing was literally sliding off my cake. I had to freehand the cupcake because my icing was too soft to put on the gel template. Still proud of my cupcake for being freehand though because I can't draw to save my life.

Honestly, I am in awe of 99% of the cakes here and don't know if I'll ever be able to make them as nice as you all. Its an art and one that needs perfecting. Just like painting or drawing.

You obviously have natural talent because your first cake doesn't look bad at all! I am embarrassed to put a pic up of my first cake because the fondant is AWFUL! LOL

My first cake was horrible. I was in a crafts class at school and the teachers decided that we needed to compete in a state wide contest. We went up against trade schools! So I chose cake decorating. I was told to bring a sample cake. So I brought a single 6" cake. One color of icing. I had no clue. I never did it before or had any clue what I was up against!!! I really was soooo embarrassed. These kids were in culinary trade school and were whipping out buttercream roses and piping borders like professionals! I had a hot pink icing and didnt even know how to pipe a border straight! The other girls were laughing at it. I wanted to take my cake and crawl into a whole and die. Then I wanted to smash the cake in the teachers face for making us compete and not giving us any clue what we were up against!!!
But by our mistakes, thats how we learn. And with practice you get better. And without those pictures that you can look back on, you cant see how far you've come.

Here's mine, it's not my FIRST cake, but those were before my digital camera. I sure hope it doesn't end up on the home page, I just tried to correct my typo in the description, oh well.....this cake was my 1st cake after 4 yrs, before that it was just birthday cakes for the kids. This one was also the practice before this bridal shower cake.... http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=41560 so after one month I LOVED the improvements, LMBO!!!!!

I do hope to be able to FIND & scan pics from the first couple, just for laughs!!!

We all start somewhere. It's also good to look back and go wow i'm learning so much. I took no classes just found this website after I was asked to make a cake. This was my first ever cake and the start of the whole monster that is cake decorating that gets under your skin and you've had it. I think everyones first cakes are amazing, seeing progress cake by cake. They are all something to be proud of. Gotta know where we've been to know where we are going. xxxxx

I was so proud of my cakes BEFORE I got onto this site! LOL! I still like them, but now as I look back, I feel they are so "Wilton Cookie Cutter".

I'm not ashamed of them, but I am certainly starting to step up my game since becoming a member here, and I love it!

But the other posters are right ... how can you see how far you've come without those first time photos? If you start out at the top, there's nowhere to go.

Ah ah! I know exactly what you mean. My first fondant cake I made I had idea how to work with fondant -- I couldn't even get it smooth and fitted on the cake.

I still think it turned out cute and my figures were cool but it is so flawed it makes me laugh. This is how we learn though!

I think it is awesome that you made a Megashark vs Giant Octopus cake - what was the occasion?

What a cool thread! I love looking at 'first & latest' photos of CC folks. I personally don't have a digital picture of my first cake (from 1989). I got a scanner as a Christmas gift last year and hopefully in the near future, I'll have time to get those old photos scanned and into my blog. Here's one of my first 'digital age' cakes:

I dug this photo out when I first discovered CakeCentral...
As they say...we've come a long way baby!!

Thanks! Some friends and I like to have horror movie nights and we were watching a horrible B movie called Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and I just made to make it. It was really fun to cut it up and eat it.

I'm also still very new to all this, and have only decorated 2 cakes to date (I bake a lot, but the odd swirl of icing is my limit until now!)

My first cake wowed my family at the Birthday party, but I can see a million flaws on the photos ha ha! Still, daughter loved it and i'm still very fond of it as it was my first attempt and got me hooked on caking icon_smile.gif

My second cake wasn't a huge amount better, but I can't seem to post the pic on CC icon_sad.gif It just comes up black every time I try!

My email never even let me know that there were so many replies! Yes, I think it is a good idea to look back and see where I have come from, even though it is kind of embarrassing. The rest of you, you are really not giving yourselves enough credit, those cakes look way better! I have to clarify something though. This was not my first EVER cake, I've made pan cakes and stuff, just not decorated cakes, especially with fondant. But hey, that is how I learned!

This was my 3rd cake. I started off with fondant. I don't know what I was thinking and if I had to re-create it now I'd do it very, very, very differently.

I love this post. Thanks. Here is a cake I made before I started taking my classes, but wanted to get into fondant work. I made the babies by looking at a Wilton book. I didn't get my bc smooth, but my dd loved it.

This is a great topic! I don't have my very first cake - was so appalled I deleted the pic from my computer. But...I have a one layer poinsettia cake I thought was just the best little thing when I made it. A year later I did a tiered routine for xmas and can't believe I thought that poinsettia cake was so good at the time!

Oh the mushy red made with a tongue numbing amount of Wilton red coloring.... icon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gif
