How do I do a small checkers pattern to decorate around a "cars" cake ? What technique should i go with ? Where could i find a square cutter ?

you could use a square cutter.
the other thing you can use is a ruler. roll out the fondant and use a ruller that is about 1 to 1.5 inches wide. cut strips and then turn the ruler 90 degrees adn cut more strips. you will have squares 
do this with each color.
then, place on the cake like this... b= black, w= white
