Is it possible to smooth out royal icing once it has almost completely dried on a cake dummy? How?

let it dry completely and sand it down with fine sanding paper

For my entry into this years fair, I made the RI fairly thin. I set the dummy on a cooke rack and poured the RI over and let it run down. I scrapped up that part that went thru and heated it to runny and just kept pouing over until is was covered. I worked perfectly except I htough it was dry and picked up and left a huge thumb print in top but covered with rose. Good Luck
