That serves 12 according to the Wilton chart. That's what I use 
That is if it is a 2-layer cake, I should add.

Yes, 6" would work for 6 people - just had a 6" cookie and cream filled (torted and filled twice) devils food for dessert tonight and it fed 5 nice size slices and there is almost 1/2 of it left over.
