Well I had earlier been on CC freaking out about the prospect of having to try and pull off soimething similar to the amazing cross cake attached that I am donating to our church for a celebration. Anyway, I have informed them as I am a novice they shouldn't have their hopes up to high as my skills aren't in the same league!
Anyway, the latest is that they have decided that they want it all brown - we discussed that maybe the piping (which I am terrible at) might be able to be in a different colour, they thought maybe cream, I was thinking maybe pale pink or blue? What do you guys think? Your input would be appreciated

I think if it were pastel pink or blue, I would think more of a baby's christening or something. I think I would stick with cream.
BROWN!!!!! How ugly would that be! I also think that pink or blue would look like a baby shower, etc. Cream with taupe or beige and white would be elegant. BROWN?????
I would think that with all that piping on there if done in a light color, on a brown background any "flaws" will be very noticeable. And if I were unsure about my piping skills, which quite honestly I am, I would try to steer them more in the direction of 2 colors that are pretty close like Peridot suggested...cream with taupe or beige and white. Just my opinion.
Good luck
Besides many rows of a beaded border, it is just vines with random flowers. I don't think the piping is going to be as hard as you think. Icing that monster is! Good luck. Agree with blue or pink looking like a baptism or shower cake. I like the entire cross being cream. Looks very GRAND and elegant.
I know what ya mean about the brown - the lady who I was dealing with was horrified but she said she was out-voted by the rest of the committee. Was kinda funny! The celebration is in honour of Mary McKillop (who our church is named after) who is being made a saint and was in a group of nuns called the "brown joeys" in Australia I think, called so because they all wore brown. Hence them wanting the cross to be brown.
I'd have the silly inclination to incorporate a 'Roo into the overall cake design. But I'm weird like that.
Voted cream, also. Although brown's an important color to them it's more elegant to have cream.

I am going to definately do it brown because it has special meaning to them but its just the piping that I wasn't sure about - just wondered if I could incorporate a little bit more colour into it somehow that way. I thought maybe if I did cream piping on the brown and maybe make some wee cream roses to put around the base or something??? But maybe brown on brown would be better. Ever get that sinking feeling that the cake is doomed look horrendous LOL!!!!
I would do the cross in a light brown (it's still brown ) with cream or taupe piping. If they haven't specified the shade, just make it a bit paler. I think brown on brown might be a bit dark.
I think it would be gorgeous in chocolate on chocolate scrollwork.
I am with Nancy on this one! Chocolate brown, with chocolate scrollwork and even a chocolate candy clay bow would look amazing! Or to add the cream color in, do a cream candy clay bow!It is all in the way you decorate it. Good luck and can't wait to see the pics!
I agree that chocolate on chocolate is beautiful. The texture of the piping will show up fine and the overall effect will be very appealing -- chocolate always looks wonderful.
