I just signed up for Wilton's new class tonight at Michaels!!! I am so excited!!! I took course 3 in November of 2005 - I've been in withdrawal ever since! The class starts Feb 5 and I am counting down the days! I just thought I'd share my excitement!!!

Congrats!! ![]()
I'm excited about the new course as well. Can't wait to start teaching it.
I am excited for the class also. Our wilton instustor sent out Christmas cards with her schedule for the up coming year. And I can't remember for sure but I think that class isn't until May.
Don't get me wrong I am still learning alot on CC. But I am a hands on kind of person. I got to see somethings in order to make them. Recipes like I have been perfecting I can do on my own. But decorating I have to see to understand. I am so excited. She is going to offer other classes if she can. I have been in withdrawls as well. Just like when CC is down. ![]()
Is that class both Fondant and Gumpaste? I have called this morning and our class starts on Feb.8. But I did not know if it was both, or just fondant? I need to learn more about both.....am excited! ![]()
According to my friend - who is instructing it - it uses both. In some cases you mix the fondant and gumpaste together. I am taking the class starting February 3!!! I am excited also! Now if only they could teach me some pulled and spun sugar techniques!!
2sdae:
1. Cut-Outs: round, leaf, heart & daisy
2. Daisy Cookie Cutter
3. Daisy Cut-Outs
4. Dusting Pouch
5. Thin Shaping Foam & Ball and Veining Tool
6. 20 Flower Stamens
7. Fondant Decorative Punch Set
7. Fondant Ribbon Cutter/Embosser
My instructor asked that you bring the kit, 12" cake circles, roll & cut mat, large rolling pin and the small and angled spatulas.
I start the class Feb. 7th ![]()

This looks like fun! Just curious, what are the kinds of things being taught in this class? Is it mostly flowers, or other stuff too?
A quick overlay of the class is:
Lesson 1:
Tinting and marbleizing fondant
Covering a cake board with fondant. Also using the new spiral rolling pin to add texture to it.
Covering a round cake with fondant
Lesson 2:
Making gum glue
Draping using fondant/gumpaste blend
Handkerchief- style overlay
Ribbon Garland and Border
Carnation Base (gumpaste)
Lesson 3:
Gumpaste Daisy
Finishing the Gumpaste Carnation
Carnation Calyx
Carnation Leaf
Gumpaste Fantasy Flower
Leaf
Lesson 4:
Fondant Favor Box
Demo of using fondant cut-outs (cut out, overlays and inlays)
Fondant borders: Ball, Embellished Rope and Punched Strip
Final Cake
For the final cake there are 4 choices in the back of the book. One has the fantasy flower and draping, one has ribbon garland and dasies, one is the handkerchief with the fondant favor box and the final as a overlay of fondant with with hearts.
Some of it will be a little bit of repeat to the C3. Covering a cake with fondant, though these are round cakes instead of squares, is one of them. But the new course does introduce some new techinues like the gumpaste flowers. It also shows you several neat ideas for the Fondant Decorative Punch Set and the Fondant Ribbon Cutter/Embosser.
The course at Michaels will be $30 (as all Michaels classes have gone up $5.) The monthly promotion for Feb is 1/2 off so it would be $15. March is buy the kit get the class free. And April will be 40% off making the class $18.
Hobby Lobby and the other stores are scheduled to start teaching it around May, so don't worry, those that have those stores in the area will get the classes as well.
I think Michael's is starting it first then the other stores will follow.
At JoAnn's the classes start in May. I haven't gotten my instructors packet yet on the class but it should be here in the next couple of weeks. I am really excited about this class!!!
Just a quick question. I've got my kit and signed up, and it doesn't mention on my sheet that a cake is required, but in class 1, you mention covering a round cake with fondant, is that a demonstration? Or do we need to bring a cake? Just some clarification would be great!!
The following items are what you will need to bring to Lesson 1.
Tools From Your Kitchen
Reusable, disposable cloths
2 tablespoons of white vegetable shortening
2 tablespoons of cornstarch
2 tablespoons of powdered sugar
Toothpicks
Corsage Pin
Scissors
Scotch Tape
Plastic food storage wrap
2 or 3 gallon size food storage bags
2 or 3 quart size food storage bags
Icings
1 package of White Fondant (24oz size)
1 Fondant Multi-pack (Primary or Pastel)
Piping Gel or White Piping Gel Tube
Decorating Tools and Supplies
Fondant and Gum Paste Student Kit
2 12 inch cake circles + Fanci-foil or 12" Silver Cake Base
Roll & Cut Mat
20" rolling pin
Small angled spatula
Disposable Decorating Gloves (optional)
You do not need a cake for Lesson 1. Sorry when I typed that out I was going but the headlines in the book, and while the students will cover a cake in Lesson 2 there isn't acutally a headline in the book about it, since the information is in Lesson 1, where the Instructor is suppose to demo it for you.
You will bring a 8in round cake for Lesson 2 and Lesson 4.
Nglez09, the fondant punch and fondant ribbon cutter are used in lessons 2 and 4.
I can't wait for the fondant/gumpaste class! The one at Michael's by my house doesn't start until next month and they still don't have the calendar out! I'm so excited because fondant is so difficult for me even though I've practiced with it.
Well, I am some what dissapointed. The class started with covering a cake drum with fondant and being taught to marblize fondant. Kinda lame there. Then next week we bring in a 8x3 in. cake covered in fondant to learn how to make drapes and the base of the daisy flowers and we are supposed to make gum glue at home on our own. We only will be learning how to make the daisy, the carnation and their fantasy flower!
I think they should focus more on the flowers and such instead of the drapping and using their ribbon cutters and embossers. It seems this class is almost just a boost to sell their items to you. Like a demo a vaccuum salesman would come to your house and do to show you how wonderful their vaccuum is! ![]()
But if you haven't taken their course 3 or worked with fondant it would be very helpful. And don't get me wrong, I want to learn to make those flowers too but I am glad I got the class for 50 o/o off and used 40 o/o off coupon for kit!
Hey!! Do y'all know if that course is going to be offered in the Vancouver, WA area???
Thanks,
Lazy_Susan
I start this class tomorrow and I am so excited!! I have been in withdrawl since last April when I finished Course 3!! I also signed up to take a class taught by Colette Peters next month at the Mid- Atlantic cake show in MD. I am bouncing off the walls in excitement for that one!!!! ![]()
I too can't wait. Must join this thread. ![]()
Our Michael's doesn't even have the kits in yet, although I already have everything except for the floral cutter and their puff thing so I'm not getting the kit. Glad to know that I got the class at the cheapest price it's going to be offered at so far.
It sounds a little disappointing in class one, but I'm anxious to learn the drapes as I think the 'elegant fondant' class is no more or this is replacing it or something like that. I would like to add more flowers in my list of skills, but I agree on more flowers period, maybe a class on just flowers would be great.
I'll let you know how it goes!

I agree with 2sdae- I had my first class on Saturday and it really seems like this class is geared towards their products- Almost no flowers are taught (even though they sell an entire kit of flower cutters) and no figure sculpting (though our instructor is going to show us a few after class next week). I was hoping for a little more advanced class than this seems to be. ![]()
Just wondering how everyone is liking or disliking this new class from Wilton.
I'll admit the first night was a bit of a repeat from Course 3 but if you have not taken Course 3 then it's all new material. Covering the cake board was new, but don't expect it to keep well till the next week. I didn't crack or anything, I just got lots of marks from the plastic wrap all over it. I however think I'll stick to just the top and not the sides like they showed in class. Night two was better and I learned a lot about doing the drapes as I had no idea that you had to hem it as you would fabric for a clean edge, nor did I realize that it was a fondant/gumpaste mix and not just straight fondant so it would harden more and stay in place and not stretch. I think I got that right. ![]()
I know they try and sell a lot of their stuff... after all it is a Wilton class, you just have to take away what you learned and use it the way you want. I think you learn something new even if you take the same class from a different instructor. I'm glad I signed up. (It's also my night out from the kids! Yeah!!)
Anyway I've not seen any photos yet so I thought I'd post and see what everyone thought. I posted my pick on the class 2 cake,... I did a heart as I wanted something for Valentine's Day... learned how to cover it in fondant! Much easier than I thought.
