I have to make a round cake this weekend for a friend's sister. She is into needlepoint and wants the cake in that theme. I'm sticking with Buttercream icing, but am clueless on how to design it in a Needlepoint theme. Any suggestions or how to instructions....anything???? would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

You could use a small pattern woven texture mat or one of those plastic needlepoint sheets(they are super inexpensive) to texture the cake and then do some piping resembling needlepoint stitches over the top.

Here is a link to a dictionary of stitches used in embroidery and needlepoint.

Maybe you could use royal icing to make yourself a template of the stitches to press into the cake as a guide.

There are lots of free patterns of pretty vintage flowers that would look amazing on cake! hth can't wait to see how it turns out icon_smile.gif

More samples (just in case you want to do it as a separate decoration and not on the cake):

There's a difference between needlepoint and cross-stitch. Needlepoint gets done on a canvas, doesn't necessarily mean using "crosses". I always thought cross-stitch is a kind of needlestitch, but I could be wrong

More info here.

They are different but the look is similar, they sell the patterns and kits together at craft stores, you have to be careful what you are getting.

Needlepoint can be done on Aida fabric but only uses one stitch, similar to the back stitich and generally uses 2-3 threads instead of the (usually) one with cross stitch.

Most accessories used are the same which is why I directed the OP to cross stitch images (also because there are more).
