How Long Before Delivery Can A Cake Be Made?

Cake bakers & decorators:
How long in advance can a decorated cake be made and safely kept until serving? I have a groom's cake that would need to completed by Tuesday night for a wedding on Saturday. The mother of the groom will have to travel 6 hours with the cake to the wedding destination. She is a very dear friend and I would love to make the cake for her, but I want it to be good!

that depends... what filling are you using? what about icing?
Will there be an oppotunity to freeze it for a couple of days?

Tuesday to Saturday is too long in my book without freezing.
