Sphere Head Cake On Top Of Round Cake - Do Able??

So I want to make an elmo cake. I am thinking of makeing the body out of cake and then making a ball cake for the head and sticking them both on a thick dowel. Tehn ice with buttercream
I just can't make rice crispy treats - they always break.
Questions
- Do you think there is any chance it will work or am I crazy
- What type of cake would you suggest for the head

I think if you dowel the cake between the head and shoulders you shouldn't have any problems. I would still build on a center dowel. Last thing you would want is for elmos head to fall off 
I would use a pound cake or something along those lines so that it holds up better.
