I am making a birthday cake and the plates they are using show a full rose and stem- what is the best way- instead of floral tape- to cover the stem? I am making gumpaste roses- should I use fondant or gum paste to cover the wire?

Maybe you could do something similar to this cake by Peggy Porschen. She does gumpast roses but places them so the stems are actually just fondant snakes instead of wires. I LOVE this cake!!!

I love that look of fondant stems for flowers with large stems but many applications would still require a wire. Any suggestions of getting this fondant snake on a wire. Otherwide the only thing you can do with this flower is attach it to the side of a cake. I've seen this application with flowers extending from the cake but wondered how they got the wire in there.
