I think the aversion to alcohol is the same as the aversion to smoking. If a person smokes or drinks (or loves garlic) then there's no problem with those around doing the same thing.
Personally, I've seen far too much drinking and driving as my BIL was a policeman; so on the rare occasions I have a drink it's at home, and the most that's offered to guests would be a beer or two.
